MONDAY, FEBRUARY 22: INCOME AND HEALTH INSURANCE
Profile America for the 22nd day of Black History Month. One of the key indicators of the health of a population segment is household income. The most recent figures -- those for 2008 -- show African-Americans with a median household income of $34,218 a year -- a drop of 2.8 percent from the previous year. The poverty rate for black households was almost one-in-four -- unchanged from 2007. When it comes to health insurance coverage -- one of the hottest topics across the nation for many months -- nearly one-in-five African-American households is uncovered by medical insurance, about the same as the year before. This special edition of Profile America is a public service of the U.S. Census Bureau, conducting the 2010 Census beginning April 1st.
