FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 26: FIRST BLACK NEWSPAPER
Profile America for the 26th day of Black History Month. The first African-American Newspaper in the U.S. was published in New York City on March 16, 1827. Called Freedom's Journal, it was the work of John Russwurm — Bowdoin college's first black graduate and thought to be the third in the country — and his partner Samuel Cornish. Today, African-Americans are becoming an integral part of the fast-growing communications industry. Blacks own more than 14,000 firms, generating revenue of $2.5 billion a year. These holdings include more than 3,000 publishing firms, 2,300 Internet businesses, and nearly 3,800 motion picture and sound recording companies. This special edition of Profile America is a public service of the U.S. Census Bureau, conducting the 2010 Census beginning April 1st.
