SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 27: NORMA SKLAREK
Profile America for the 27th day of Black History Month. Norma Sklarek was a pioneer in the field of architecture. She was the first African-American woman to become a licensed architect. She was also the first to join the American Institute of Architects, which later honored her with a fellowship. Now semi-retired, she has designed high-rise office buildings, hotels, hospitals, and shopping malls. Among her best-known designs are the city hall in San Bernardino, the U.S. Embassy in Tokyo, and Terminal One at Los Angeles International Airport. There are 240,000 architects in the U.S. today, 25 percent of them female and nearly 4 1/2 percent African-American. This special edition of Profile America is a public service of the U.S. Census Bureau, conducting the 2010 Census beginning April 1st.
