SATURDAY, APRIL 17: 1980
Profile America — Saturday, April 17th. The national census now under way is the 23rd time this once-a-decade count has been conducted since 1790. The 20th census in 1980 profiled a nation dealing with social, technological, and foreign policy developments. That census counted more than 226.5 million people. In the decade to follow, the first personal computers went on sale, Sandra Day O'Connor became the first woman to sit on the Supreme Court, and the space shuttle Challenger exploded shortly after launch. As the decade ended, the fall of the Berlin Wall symbolized the approaching end of the Cold War. Profile America is presented by the U.S. Census Bureau, reminding you — take part in the 2010 Census and put your census form in the mail.
