MONDAY, APRIL 19: HONORING FALLEN POLICE
Profile America — Monday, April 19th. Most of us take public safety for granted, but that safety comes at a price — among those whose job it is to maintain law and order. That's why this week is set aside to honor police officers who have been killed in the line of duty. Across the nation, events will honor local, county, state and federal police who have given their lives while protecting the public. There are more than half-a-million police officers in the U.S. Each year, about 60,000 of them are assaulted. A vast majority of these are hitting and kicking incidents, but some involve dangerous weapons. Annually, 50 to 60 police are killed in these attacks, mostly by firearms, while up to 80 others die in duty-related accidents. Profile America is presented by the U.S. Census Bureau, now conducting the 2010 Census.
