WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 3: MAINE LOBSTER FEST
Profile America — Wednesday, August 3rd. The 64th annual Maine Lobster Festival kicks off today, and by the time it ends on Sunday, 75,000 hungry people will have flocked to the city of Rockland. The first festival, held in 1947, drew 10,000 people, paying $1 for all the lobster they could eat. Aside from lobster dinners, this year's event features live entertainment, parades, and a 10-k road race. Of course, you don't have to live in Maine to enjoy lobster. Using air freight, they can be served anywhere in the U.S. To satisfy our craving, nearly 82 million pounds of lobsters are trapped each year — worth over $306 million. You can find these and more facts about America from the U.S. Census Bureau, online at www.census.gov.
