SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 13: DAYTONA 500
Profile America — Saturday, February 13th. For NASCAR fans, the long dry spell is almost over. All week in Daytona, Florida, there have been events building excitement toward tomorrow's 52nd running of the Daytona 500. The first in the series was won by Lee Petty in an Oldsmobile 88. That year, a gallon of gas cost 25 cents, and a new car was $2,200. The Daytona 500 is now the premier event on the NASCAR calendar, and opens the Sprint Cup season. Fans will be jamming the grandstands to see their favorites, including four-time champion Jimmy Johnson, Mark Martin, and Tony Stewart. NASCAR races draw crowds of 17 million fans annually. You can find these and more facts about America from the U.S. Census Bureau, conducting the 2010 Census beginning April 1st.
