SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 27: 1930 CENSUS
Profile America — Saturday, February 27th. The national census this April will be the 23rd time this once-a-decade count has been conducted since 1790. The 15th census in 1930 profiled a nation in the grips of a worsening Depression. The census counted more than 123 million people. New York, the largest city at nearly 7 million, was more than twice of the next biggest, Chicago. In the decade to follow, unemployment reached one-in-four workers, radio became the dominant medium across the nation, and Social Security established a safety net for the retired. At the end of the decade, the beginnings of World War II were under way in Asia and Europe. You can learn more about the census in U.S. history online at 2010.census.gov.
