FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 4: CONGRESSIONAL REAPPORTIONMENT
Profile America -- Friday, February 4th. With the announcement of the official population count from the 2010 Census last December, the spotlight has shifted from the taking of the census to its constitutional purpose. For many decades, the number of seats in the House of Representatives was increased after each census. In 1913, the house capped its size at 435 members. Since that time, the fixed number of seats has been reapportioned after each census to ensure that seats in the house -- along with political power -- accurately reflect the population gains and losses of the individual states. The steps in this process and the deadlines involved are set by law. You can find these and more facts about America from the U.S. Census Bureau, online at www.census.gov.
