FRIDAY, JANUARY 15: PENTAGON COMPLETED
Profile America — Friday, January 15th. On this day in 1943, one of the most famous buildings in the world was dedicated — the Pentagon, in Arlington, Virginia. Built in just 16 months, it is the world's largest building in the terms of floor area. Within its walls are 17 1/2 miles of corridors and offices for 26,000 civilian, military and support personnel. As the nerve center of the U.S. military, the words "the Pentagon" has come to mean not only the building but the Department of Defense itself. Around the world, DOD has nearly 674,000 civilian employees and close to 1.4 million men and women in uniform. You can find these and more facts about America from the U.S. Census Bureau, now preparing for the 2010 Census on April 1st.
