THURSDAY, JANUARY 21: PREMIER GUNSMITH
Profile America — Thursday, January 21st. One of the nation's most famous gunsmiths was born on this day in 1855 in Ogden, Utah — John Browning. Taught gun making and design by his father, Browning went on to hold more patents than any other gunsmith in the world — designing guns for Winchester, Remington, Stevens, and Colt, as well as U.S. and European armies. He is credited with development of the semi-automatic shotgun, pump action shotgun and the .22 rifle. He invented water-cooled machine guns, the Browning Automatic Rifle and the Colt .45-automatic pistol. Today, the Browning Arms Company is one of nearly 200 U.S. firms making small arms — worth more than $1.5 billion a year. You can find these and more facts about America from the U.S. Census Bureau, now preparing for the 2010 Census on April 1st.
