SUNDAY, JANUARY 17: PGA FOUNDED
Profile America — Sunday, January 17th. For golfers in many parts of the country, January is a month spent dreaming of straight shots, fast greens, and above all, better weather. On this day in 1916, a group of golfers did more than just dream about their favorite game. Thirty-four of them, led by the legendary Walter Hagen, formed the Professional Golfers Association of America and developed the idea of a national championship. Now, professional golf attracts close to 7 million spectators at tournaments and millions more enjoy matches on television. In addition, 24.5 million people play golf on nearly 16,000 courses around the country, and over 12,000 young men and women play on college teams. You can find these and more facts about America from the U.S. Census Bureau, now preparing for the 2010 Census on April 1st.
