FRIDAY, JANUARY 28: FIRST ATM
Profile America -- Friday, January 28th. Several generations of Americans have conducted their banking business while rarely going inside the actual structure of their bank or working with a human teller. Automatic teller machines -- or ATMs -- have become the focal point of most people's banking needs. The first ATM in the U.S. was installed in 1969 at Rockville Center, Long Island by the Chemical Bank of New York City. By inserting a coded card, customers received a package envelope containing a set amount of cash. About 80 percent of U.S. households use ATMs. Across the nation, there are close to 6 billion ATM transactions each year. The average amount of cash involved is $99. You can find these and more facts about America from the U.S. Census Bureau, online at www.census.gov.
