Profile America -- Saturday, March 27th. The national census beginning the first of next month will be the 23rd time this once-a-decade count has been conducted since 1790. The 9th census in 1870 profiled a nation struggling to heal from the Civil War. The census counted more than 38.5 million people in the nation within the 37 states. New York City's population was nearing 1 million, and San Francisco appeared on the top 10 list for the first time, at 150,000. In the decade to follow, Yellowstone became the first national park, the Jesse James gang made the first successful train robbery in the West, and the Kentucky Derby was run for the first time.
