SATURDAY, MARCH 6: 1830 CENSUS
Profile America — Saturday, March 6th. The national census beginning the first of next month will be the 23rd time this once-a-decade count has been conducted since 1790. The 5th census in 1830 profiled a quickly expanding nation, counting nearly 13 million residents — an increase of more than one-third in just 10 years. New York remained the largest city, while second and third places were a near tie between Baltimore and Philadelphia. Also among the 10 biggest cities were Charleston, South Carolina and Albany, New York. In the decade to follow, Cyrus McCormick invented the grain reaper, opening huge sections of the great plains to agriculture, and Texas declared its independence from Mexico.
