SUNDAY, MAY 16: BAY TO BREAKERS RACE
Profile America — Sunday, May 16th. One of the largest and oldest foot races in the world will be run today in San Francisco — the Bay to Breakers 12k race, established in 1912. The event began as a way to provide some diversion for the people of the city as it struggled to recover from the disastrous earthquake of 1906. During World War II, the number of participants dwindled to about 50 annually. Today, some 70,000 runners will race on the course from San Francisco Bay through the streets of the city to the Pacific Ocean, many in costume. The event has come to be an entertainment spectacle, with 150,000 gathered to cheer the runners. More than 30 million people in the U.S. enjoy running and jogging each year. You can find these and more facts about America from the U.S. Census Bureau, online at www.census.gov.
