U.S. Counsel to Zack Shahin Welcomes Partial Consolidation of Charges, Calls on U.S. Government to Urge U.A.E. to Merge Remaining Cases
WASHINGTON, Oct. 3, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- U.S. legal counsel to Zack Shahin today issued the following statement welcoming partial consolidation of the charges against him and asking Washington to urge authorities in the U.A.E. to consolidate remaining charges.
U.S. legal counsel to Zack Shahin today issued the following statement:
"Following Zack Shahin's unanticipated return to Dubai this month, U.S. counsel have urged American consular officials in Dubai to discuss with Dubai authorities the issue of consolidating the charges against Shahin so that he may properly defend himself. Recently, in a positive development, two of the charges against him have been consolidated, but three others remain unconsolidated before separate judges. This multiplicity of cases, and of corresponding judges, presents a serious difficulty for Mr. Shahin in meeting procedural requirements, dealing with logistical demands (including needlessly numerous court appearances), and addressing the substantive issues raised in the charges against him, well as additional financial stress. U.S. counsel for Shahin has asked consular officials in Dubai to continue to engage with the Dubai judicial authorities to encourage consolidation of all cases against Mr. Shahin, so that all cases are tried as one under U.A.E. law. Overall, Mr. Shahin's health care needs have been accommodated by Dubai authorities and he has mostly been treated fairly by prison officials since his return to Dubai. Throughout his incarceration, we ask that Dubai authorities and prison officials continue fair treatment for Mr. Shahin and that all trial proceedings and any other prison investigations or searches are done in a transparent manner. At this time, we continue discussions and an investigation regarding Mr. Shahin's return to U.A.E."
