NEW YORK, Dec. 16, 2016 /PRNewswire/ --
Steady increases in unit sales and ASP over the forecast period are expected to drive the guidewire market. Guidewires are a type of access product used in combination with other devices in many neurological procedures. The increasing number of interventional neuroradiology procedures being performed has increased demand for access products and boosted growth in unit sales. More complicated procedures are now being performed so the number of guidewires used per procedure has increased, driving unit sales up. Aneurysm and AVM procedures require 1.7 to 1.8 guidewires per procedure. Innovation in the treatment of ischemic stroke with new technology like stent retrievers and flow diverting stents will drive an increase in the number of guidewires required as well.
Neurovascular guidewires are used in conjunction with microcatheters, which are used to place coils or stents at intracranial locations to treat conditions such as aneurysms and cerebral arteriovenous malformations. Guidewires are inserted into patients through a small incision near the groin and maneuvered through the vascular system to the targeted area. The microcatheter can then be threaded over the guidewire to the treatment area. There is a wide selection of guidewires available and subtle differences between each product allow them to be used for different applications. Important properties of guidewires include flexibility, stiffness, hydrophilic coating, low friction navigation and high torqueability. A torque device can be used to aid navigation and rotation of the guidewire.
