US Non-Animal Laboratory Appointed to China's Alternatives Working Group for Cosmetics
GAITHERSBURG, Md., Oct. 9, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- U.S. based Institute for In Vitro Sciences (IIVS) has been selected by China's National Institute for Food and Drug Control (NIFDC) to be a member of their working group on non-animal alternatives for cosmetics. The newly established group was announced by the NIFDC during their 2nd International Conference on Cosmetics Alternative Methods held in Beijing in September 20-21, 2018. Chaired by NIFDC Vice Director, Lu Yong, the working group also includes representatives from several Chinese provincial government agencies and companies doing business in China such as Estée Lauder, Procter & Gamble and Clarins.

The working group will advise on research and validation efforts to help establish alternatives to animal tests in China. IIVS, a world renowned leader in the validation and implementation of alternative methods, has been working directly with the NIFDC to help build the infrastructure in China that they require before more alternative methods can be accepted. IIVS was heavily involved in the review of the first alternative method accepted by China's Food and Drug Administration in 2016 and has recently advised on two other methods currently under review. Earlier this year IIVS collaborated with the world's leading chemical company BASF SE to import a cell based assay for skin sensitization into China for the NIFDC.
