U.S. Vehicle Recalls Reach Highest Quarterly Total in Nearly Two Years
Nearly 88% of Recalls Pose Crash or Injury Risk; OTA Repairs Expand but In-Person Service Remains Key
ST. PETERS, Mo., Oct. 14, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- Automakers issued 96 recall campaigns covering nearly 8.5 million vehicles in the U.S. in Q3 2025, marking the highest quarterly total since Q1 2024, according to BizzyCar's latest Recall Report. This is the second consecutive quarter with unusually high recall numbers, highlighting the continued safety risks drivers face.
Nearly 19.3 million vehicles have been recalled so far this year, and the majority involve safety-critical defects such as brakes, fuel systems, or back-over prevention.
"The sheer volume of recalls this quarter highlights how complex modern vehicles have become," said Ryan Maher, CEO of BizzyCar. "Safety-critical systems like brakes, fuel, and electronics must be addressed promptly to prevent accidents."
Key Findings from the Q3 2025 Recall Report:
- 8,494,262 vehicles recalled, a 16% increase from an already elevated Q2
- Ford led all manufacturers with 5,041,241 vehicles affected, nearly 60% of the total
- Roughly 88% of recalled vehicles pose crash or injury risk
- Top issue: Back-over prevention systems (1,749,524 vehicles affected)
- Three "Park Outside" advisories issued, covering 200,997 vehicles
- 1,359,442 vehicles (16% of Q3 recalls) eligible for Over-the-Air (OTA) software-based repairs
Ford Dominates Safety-Related Recalls
Ford accounted for nearly 60% of all Q3 recalls, primarily for critical systems such as brakes, fuel delivery, back-over prevention, and electrical components. The scale of these recalls highlights how even large manufacturers face challenges keeping up with increasingly complex vehicle technology.
Why Dealership Visits Remain Essential
While OTA updates can quickly resolve some software-related issues, most recalls still require in-person repairs. Service visits allow:
- Thorough inspections to uncover additional safety or maintenance issues
- Customer protection by ensuring all safety systems function correctly
- Revenue and loyalty opportunities through high-value service experiences
"OTA updates are helpful, but there's no substitute for a technician inspecting the vehicle in person," Maher added. "Dealerships are on the front line of keeping drivers safe and building long-term trust."
What's Ahead
The Q3 surge reflects ongoing challenges for OEMs as vehicles become more technologically advanced. Analysts expect continued recall volatility in 2026 due to complex electronics, supply chain pressures, and evolving safety standards. Dealerships that respond efficiently to recalls will be best positioned to protect drivers while growing customer loyalty.
