Valentine's Day Sex is Obligatory and Unexciting According to Many Americans, Survey Shows
OTTAWA, Ontario, Feb. 13, 2019 /PRNewswire/ -- As couples across the country get ready for what is billed as the most romantic day of the year, a recent survey conducted by market research firm Harris Interactive on behalf of We-Vibe, the premium pleasure company that invented the couples vibrator, uncovered unexpected findings that more than 1/3 of Americans are not looking forward to having sex with their partner on Valentine's Day.
The survey of over 5,000 people aged 18 and older in the United States, Australia, France, Germany and the U.K. posed various questions to respondents regarding their attitudes toward the holiday. Among the five countries surveyed, the U.S. was the only country where "having sex with my partner" was not among the top three activities they participated in on Valentine's Day. Perhaps not surprisingly, having dinner, giving or receiving flowers or chocolates and having a nice conversation with a partner all ranked higher on the list of most popular activities for most couples on the 14th.
Other findings include that while 88% of Americans believe Valentine's Day must be celebrated, 61% of them are annoyed by it and 63% are uncertain of what their partner's expectations are for the holiday. Furthermore, 56% of Americans are disappointed that past Valentine's Days haven't lived up to their expectations.
But it's not all doom and gloom. According to sexologist and relationship expert Dr. Jessica O'Reilly, PhD, this breakdown suggests that while most Americans look forward to getting intimate on the 14th, there is an apparent lack of communication on the subject and how to make it exciting and fun.
"Talking about sex can be intense and intimidating, which is why I suggest a three-step formula for those conversations," said Dr. O'Reilly.
- Start with the positive – tell them what you already love about your sex life. Providing positive feedback on an ongoing basis will make all conversations easier; even the tough ones.
- Make an offer – ask them if there is anything they would like to try.
- Make a request – tell them about your desires, whether it be trying something new like incorporating a couples toy or expressing a fantasy.
Overall, with better communication about expectations and a little open-mindedness, Valentine's Day has a lot of romantic potential.
"Valentine's Day provides couples with the perfect opportunity to strengthen their communication with each other and build intimacy," said Dr. O'Reilly. "One way to add some extra excitement to the night is by complementing your routine with a couples toy like the We-Vibe Sync, which is designed to provide vibrating stimulation during intercourse. In fact, couples who bring toys into the bedroom report higher levels of desire, arousal and orgasm."
