"The added coverage in South America automatically becomes available to our Yonder service customers, so all aviation and maritime customers can now benefit from this expansion," said Don Buchman, ViaSat director of Mobile Broadband. "We continue to expand our Yonder network, region by region, and remain on target to complete the full deployment of the network by the end of 2012."
The combination of ViaSat airborne high-speed Internet equipment and Yonder data and voice service provides passengers with a high-speed, office-in-the-sky experience that is on par with the latest in home and office IP network applications and services. The VMT-1500 airborne terminal features ViaSat-patented ArcLight® technology that uses a very small, lightweight antenna, but enables large antenna performance.
The Yonder network, which ViaSat began building in 2007 with partner KVH Industries Inc., delivers a typical user experience for airborne customers of 1-2 Mbps of data to the aircraft, and up to 512 kbps data from the aircraft. Yonder service is enjoyed today by operators of Gulfstream GIV, GV, G450, and G550 aircraft; Bombardier Global Express and Challenger aircraft; Cessna Citation X aircraft; and the Boeing BBJ. KVH offers its comparable mini-VSAT service over the same network to commercial vessels, private yachts, and the U.S. Coast Guard.
