According to Nancy Phillips, ViaWest Chief Operating Officer, "ViaWest strives to provide our clients with the security and controls they need for their businesses. Receipt of these reports confirms our commitment to processes and standards that enable us to maintain the quality and security controls that our customers need."
ViaWest achieved these reports through the independent auditing firm Coalfire Systems, working in conjunction with one of the Big Four accounting firms. These reports became available in November and December of 2011.
PCI Report
Payment Card Industry Data Security Standards (PCI DSS) is the current global data security standard adopted by the major payment card brands that applies to all organizations that store, process or transmit cardholder data. PCI DSS provides a framework for developing robust security processes. These standards were put in place in response to devastating data breaches that had severe impacts on customers and companies alike. In earning the PCI report on compliance for sections 9 and 12 of the PCI DSS, ViaWest is able to support its clients in meeting the criteria for two of the twelve different PCI DSS requirements.
For Steve Lilley, Customer Services Director for Exit41, the fact that ViaWest data centers are audited for PCI Section 9 and 12 compliance and have SOC reports is very important. "Because ViaWest is PCI Sections 9 and 12 compliant and has the SOC reports, when our clients are conducting PCI audits, all I have to do is provide them with audit reports from ViaWest," Lilley explains.
SOC 1 and SOC 3 Reports
According to the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA), "Service Organization Controls (SOC) reports are designed to help service organizations, organizations that operate information systems and provide information system services to other entities, build trust and confidence in their service delivery processes and controls through a report by an independent Certified Public Accountant."
ViaWest recently completed a Service Organization Controls assessment of its colocation services in 21 data centers. As a result of the assessment, ViaWest has a dual-standard Type II SOC 1 report prepared in accordance with the AICPA's Statement on Standards for Attestation Engagements No. 16 (SSAE 16) and the International Standards for Assurance Engagements No. 3402 (ISAE 3402). The SSAE 16 Type II SOC 1 replaces the Statement on Auditing Standards (SAS) No. 70 Type II, which ended in 2011.
Additionally, ViaWest obtained the SysTrust Seal on the Security Trust Services Principles and Criteria, also known as a SOC 3 report.
