Victory on Public Question 1 Means More Funding for School Infrastructure, Job Creation, Economic Investment
Securing Our Children's Future Bond Act Passes After Hard Work from Road to Repair
SPRINGFIELD, N.J., Nov. 7, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- Voters in New Jersey passed the Securing Our Children's Future Bond Act by voting in favor of Public Question 1 on Tuesday. The passage of the Act follows weeks of tireless support from the Road to Repair campaign, Engineers Labor-Employer Cooperative, the New Jersey State Building & Construction Trades Council, the Keystone Mountain Lakes Regional Council of Carpenters, the NJ Association of Pipe Trades, and the Mechanical & Allied Crafts Council of New Jersey to secure funding for schools, support our children's health and safety and create hundreds of good-paying jobs.
"Today is a victory for New Jersey's children, and we're thrilled that our hard work in support of Question 1 has paid off," said William T. Mullen, President of the New Jersey State Building & Construction Trades Council. "The infrastructure investments in the Bond Act will create good-paying construction jobs that will boost New Jersey's economy while safeguarding the health of our children."
The Securing Our Children's Future Bond Act authorizes New Jersey to issue bonds of $500,000,000, allocating funds to school districts, vocational schools and county colleges that would improve water infrastructure, enhance school security and improve technical education facilities.
Despite the clear importance of New Jersey's school infrastructure in protecting our children and building a strong future for our economy, many of the state's facilities are in poor condition.
"Anybody who's watched the news at all lately knows that our water infrastructure in particular is in dire need of improvement – and that it too often threatens our children's safety in schools," said Mark Longo, Director of the Engineers Labor-Employer Cooperative. "New Jersey's voters strongly signaled their support for safe schools, infrastructure investment and skills training all at once. This is a step forward for our economy and bodes well for New Jersey's future."
Road to Repair championed the project after recognizing the need to invest in school water pipe infrastructure, school security, and career and technical education facilities all at once. The measure received widespread support as residents recognized the importance of infrastructure investment and the dangers lead and other risks pose for New Jersey's children.
Utilizing state-of-the-art targeting, Road to Repair hyper-focused the critical messages about the bond act to the key constituencies most likely to support. Given the amount of focus on key congressional races throughout the state, the campaign understood the need for laser like precision and the success that would bring.
