Vidcie Survey Reveals 77 percent of Americans Would Feel Safer if Police Were Equipped with Body Mounted Cameras
New Survey Shows Majority of Americans in Strong Favor of Police Body-Cams
SUNNYVALE, Calif., Aug. 21, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Vidcie, a provider of real-time video streaming and recording solutions, today unveiled the results of a study of American's attitudes toward police-worn video cameras, including sentiments about their potential impact on public safety and prevention of excessive force.
Conducted through uSamp, the study found that 74 percent of Americans believe police officers should be required to wear body mounted cameras and that doing so, would have equal benefit to both officers and civilians.
The survey, which includes responses from more than 1,300 American citizens, uncovered the following perceptions:
- 74 percent of Americans are in favor of police-worn cameras
- 81 percent of Americans believe police-worn cameras would have a positive impact in police interactions with civilians; only 6 percent believe they would negatively impact interactions
- 70 percent of Americans believe that police-worn cameras would benefit both police officers and civilians
- 77 percent of Americans would feel safer if police officers were equipped with wearable cameras
- 80 percent of Americans believe that police-worn cameras would prevent the use of excessive force
In addition, Vidcie was able to analyze the data by a variety of demographics including age, race, income and geography, and further found that:
- Younger adults (age 18-34) are less likely to be against body mounted cameras than older adults (55+)
- 71 percent of Caucasians believe police officers should be required to wear body mounted cameras, compared to 88 percent of African Americans
"The potential impact of body mounted cameras for police is significant and can be a win-win for both officers and citizens in capturing questionable incidents," said Romulus Pereira, CEO of Vidcie. "At the same time, there exist inefficiencies with current body cam solutions that need to be addressed, from their inability to live-stream video for added real-time situational awareness and decision making, to improved secure storage so video can't be lost or tampered with."
