Video from European Parliament Available on thenewsmarket.com: Novel Foods, Reaching a Compromise for Legislation
NEW YORK, March 17, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Get content from European Parliament at:
This Wednesday 16 March, the Committee on Petitions discussed three petitions related to Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs). Citizens are concerned that the European Food Safety Agency (EFSA) adequately lives up to its mission of ensuring that Europe's food is safe, that decisions to authorise cultivation of GMOs are based on independent scientific knowledge, not influenced by commercial interests. Pino Arlacchi, S&D MEP, (Italy), said: "We work to reach an agreement. But this agreement has to guarantee the consumer because the consumers have the right to know what they eat. Now they have not this right and we have to reach an agreement for a rule that stress clearly what it is the food, where this food comes and give to the consumers the knowledge, the information necessary."
