More than 1000 doctors and researchers attended the International Osteoporosis Foundation's first Asia-Pacific Osteoporosis Meeting, which took place from December 10 to 13 2010 in Singapore. It was the first of a new series of annual IOF meetings for the Asia-Pacific region and one of the largest scientific osteoporosis meetings in Asia in 2010. The meeting offered a new platform for research from Asia and provided valuable clinical information about advances in osteoporosis. It was preceded by an informative Public Forum organized by the Osteoporosis Society of Singapore (OSS). According to OSS Vice-President Dr Siok Bee Chionh, in Singapore alone hip fracture rates for women over 50 years of age increased 5-fold between the 1950's and 1990's. Dr Vivian Balakrishnan, Singapore Minister for Community Development, Youth and Sports, was Guest of Honour at the opening. Available video includes soundbites from the event.
