VIDEO from SodaStream and Synaptic Digital: PRECYCLING: Consumers Go Green with SodaStream
NEW YORK, April 21, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- More and more people are avoiding bottled water in an effort to reduce waste. Now, eco-conscious consumers can also reduce -- or even eliminate -- soda bottles and cans by using SodaStream (NASDAQ: SODA). SodaStream's carbonating bottles are reusable up to three years, which means the average family can save over 2000 bottle and cans each year. Just in time for Earth Day, SodaStream showcases its revolutionary line of home soda makers in retail locations nationwide, including Bed Bath & Beyond, Kohl's, Macy's and Williams-Sonoma.

"Precycling" -- eliminating waste at its source -- is a popular buzzword this Earth Day, and it's even better for the environment than recycling. According to the Container Recycling Institute, only about 25% of the bottles and cans in the United States are recycled. Most of the waste ends up in landfills, and even parks and waterways.
"Everyone talks about the three R's of conscientious consumption: Reduce, Reuse and Recycle," noted Daniel Birnbaum, CEO of SodaStream International. "SodaStream is at the pinnacle of this hierarchy, reducing the number of trashed bottles and cans virtually to zero."
The resources needed to support the production, distribution and consumption of packaged beverages are indeed staggering. Each year, 460 billion bottles and cans are manufactured and sold, of which 340 billion bottles and cans go to landfill (141 billion in the US alone).
"For Earth Day this year, we can all make small choices that have a big impact on the health of our planet. If just 1% of Americans used a SodaStream home soda maker we'd save 1.5 billion bottles and cans from landfills each year," said Gerard Meyer, President of SodaStream USA.
SodaStream offers nearly 60 flavors in the United States, including regular, diet and caffeine-free options. Each pint-sized bottle is concentrated to make the equivalent of 33 cans of soda, and contains no high-fructose corn syrup or aspartame. There are traditional flavors, essences for sparkling water, green teas and exotic fruit flavors, tonic and even energy drink. And next month, the company rolls out its Sparkling Natural line of all-natural flavors.
