VisualOn Enables HEVC Mobile Streaming for New LG Uplus Service in Korea

SANTA CLARA, Calif., April 28, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- VisualOn, Inc., a multimedia software company, announced today LG Uplus' new mobile streaming service will feature high-efficiency video coding (HEVC). VisualOn's HEVC (or H.265) decoder has been implemented in LG Uplus' latest mobile video service for Android, U+HDTV, to deliver the latest standard in high-quality video for consumers in the Korean market. As a result, consumers will experience optimized data usage, higher resolution video, efficient media storage and seamless playback.

The new HEVC video compression standard has been widely anticipated, but commercial deployments are just coming to market. VisualOn's HEVC technology reduces video bit rate and bandwidth requirements by nearly half compared to prior standards, H.264/MPEG-4 AVC, while delivering better video quality. With VisualOn's HEVC software decoder, U+HDTV subscribers can stream video at 2MBPS.

U+HDTV will be available to LG Uplus' 8 million subscribers and features more than 40,000 video-on-demand (VOD) programs. LG Uplus is a subsidiary of LG Group, which also features VisualOn's HEVC technology on their LG G2 smartphones, one of the first smartphones with a native HEVC support.
