Vita-Tech International Donates 12 Tons of Nutritional Products for Mother and Child Health in Honduras
TUSTIN, Calif., June 3, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Vita-Tech International, Inc. has donated 12 tons of fresh-dated multi-mineral tablets to Direct Relief International to globally assist pregnant and nursing women. "We know that mother/child health is key to a more successful world future," said Vita-Tech president Thomas T. Tierney. "We are proud to make this contribution which also supports the work of The University of California, Santa Barbara Global Medical Brigade's activities in Honduras as well as Direct Relief's maternal and child health programs," Tierney said. The company, which manufactures vitamins and nutritional supplements, donated calcium/magnesium/zinc supplements.
"This donation will impact the lives of many women and children by helping them get the nutritional support they need," commented Direct Relief pharmacist Cathleen Grabowski. "It will give a significant boost to pregnant and nursing mothers in order to improve health outcomes." Grabowski commented that increased access to essential micronutrients can help keep mothers and children with limited food access healthier. Additionally, this product can help by providing one of the components for treating osteopenia and osteoporosis, she said.
In making the donation, Vita-Tech coordinated with Global Medical Brigades - UC Santa Barbara chapter to get the product to Honduran women via Direct Relief. Global Medical Brigades is a student volunteer health program that develops sustainable health initiatives and provides relief where there is limited access to health care. Direct Relief works with partners that provide health services to people in rural areas that are poor, lack health infrastructure and in which severe health challenges exist.
This is the fourth shipment totaling more than 17 tons of nutritional supplements donated in the last 24 months as part of Vita-Tech's global outreach program.
