ViXS' XCode® 4210 Processor System-on-Chip Fully Integrates the Cryptography Research CryptoFirewall™ Security and Demonstrates the SypherMedia International Kernel™
TORONTO, Sept. 8, 2011 /PRNewswire/ - ViXS Systems Inc. announced today that it is the first silicon vendor to implement the CryptoFirewall™ security core by Cryptography Research, a division of Rambus, and demonstrate it with the SypherMedia International (SMI) Kernel security code. CryptoFirewall™ and SMI technology will be demonstrated on XC4210 Soc in the ViXS Suite at IBC.
"The collaboration with Cryptography Research and SMI demonstrates our leadership and commitment to develop next generation platforms with advanced security solutions for the Pay TV market," said Sally Daub, president and CEO of ViXS. "We plan to work closely with Cryptography Research and SMI to enable manufacturers and service providers to maintain high levels of security at the platform level."
The CryptoFirewall core is a separate hardware-based security block that protects cryptographic keys and computations, providing resistance to the full range of attacks, including reverse engineering, glitch/fault induction, power analysis, protocol attacks and imaging/microscopy. It is designed to complement existing anti-piracy architectures, including software conditional access and hardware conditional access solutions. The patented tamper- and emulation-resistant techniques, derived from Cryptography Research's semiconductor security research, have made it possible for the CryptoFirewall architecture to help successfully secure over 100 million chips.
"Security is a major requirement for digital entertainment services," said Paul Kocher, president and chief scientist at Cryptography Research. "This ViXS platform provides system operators with robust hardware security tightly integrated with video decryption and processing."
SMI provides the framework for the Customer Headend and enables secure key management and entitlement generation for the CryptoFirewall core. SMI also provides the software Kernel for the Set Top Box (STB), which stores entitlements and passes them to the CryptoFirewall hardware security core. The software Kernel is designed for easy integration into ViXS' Xtensive™ software developer's toolkit.
Dennis Flaharty, President of SMI, stated "SMI has been very pleased working with ViXS Systems and we have been impressed with the breadth of their technical offerings. It is exciting to see the technologies from all three companies come together inside this chip and we congratulate ViXS on being the first to demonstrate the complete solution."
The CryptoFirewall core's end-to-end hardware security and the SMI software Kernel's integration layered together provide a simple-to-deploy and extremely robust foundation for video security. The approach provides secure key management and derivation in dedicated head-end and System-on-Chip hardware across all major forms of service distribution including satellite, IPTV, cable and digital terrestrial.
