Vonage Granted Four New Patents

HOLMDEL, N.J., July 29, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Vonage Holdings Corp. (NYSE: VG), a leading provider of communication services connecting consumers and businesses through cloud-connected devices worldwide, today announced the grant of four additional patents by the United States Patent and Trademark Office. The company now owns 47 U.S. patents.

U.S. Pat. No. 8,792,882, "Method and Apparatus for Non-Native Short Message Service Communications," issued today, provides a system for delivering low-cost international text (SMS) messages, regardless of whether the sender and recipient share a common provider or are using the same mobile app. Through this patented invention, international text messages are first sent at a minimal cost over a network such as the Internet to an SMS messaging hub that is local to the recipient. The SMS messaging hub then delivers the message to the recipient as a local SMS, rather than an international SMS, resulting in significant cost savings.    

U.S. Pat. No. 8,775,308, "Systems and Methods for Selecting a Billing Group in an Internet Protocol Environment," issued July 8, 2014, ensures the proper billing of communications originating from a device associated with multiple customer accounts, such as a business account and a personal account. 

U.S. Pat. No. 8,767,716, "Systems and Methods of Routing IP Telephony Data Packet Communications," issued July 1, 2014, improves sound quality on VoIP calls. During a VoIP call, the communications from each party may travel on different paths over the Internet to reach one another.  During the call, the quality of each path may change based on network conditions. This patented invention enables the parties' devices to periodically check the quality of the path in use and switch to an alternate path if it provides superior quality.

U.S. Pat. No. 8,760,489, "Method and Apparatus for Dynamically Adjusting Aspect Ratio of Images During a Video Call," issued June 24, 2014, enables each device on a video call to optimize the size of the video it sends to the other device, based on the dimensions of the other device's display.

Vonage has nearly 240 U.S. patent applications pending, along with numerous foreign patents and pending applications in jurisdictions worldwide.
