About the Author

John Woodward, Ph.D., is Dean of the School of Education at the University of Puget Sound. He has co-authored four technology-based programs for students with learning disabilities and a series of math programs for struggling middle school students, including TransMath®, a skills-based intervention program and NUMBERS, the new professional development modules available through Cambium Learning Solutions. He was principal investigator on 12 federal grants and has published more than 70 articles in professional journals. He co-directed a nonprofit research institute in Eugene, Oregon, that studies bilingual education, interventions for inner city schools, technology-based math and science instruction and professional development models. Additionally, his research supporting TransMath was cited in the National Math Panel's findings released on March 13, 2008.

Additional Webinar for Consideration: The Center on Instruction will also host a webinar on Wednesday, October 19, 2011, at 1:00 p.m. Central Time to discuss the recent position statement from the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) on response to intervention (RTI). Panelists Dr. John Woodward, Dr. David Chard, and Dr. Ben Clarke will discuss how NCTM's position statement aligns with and differs from the typical special education/school psychology positions on RTI and approaches to interventions for struggling students. During this webinar, they will take turns orienting the audience to various aspects of the position statement and briefly presenting their reactions to it. Russell Gersten, director of the mathematics work at the Center on Instruction, will moderate the discussion. ELL, special education, and literacy experts from the Center on Instruction will also be available to answer questions and add further insight into this fascinating topic.
