"Our annual Gran Fondo ride brings 21st Century awareness around the rising national challenges with school and campus safety," said Joseph Samaha, President of VTV Family Outreach Foundation. "Our plan is to expand this event into a National Campus Safety Awareness Day held in major cities and college campuses annually. Come join us to show your support for improving campus safety."
Gran Fondos are long-distance, mass participation cycling events popular in Italy. They're open to recreational and competitive cyclists alike. Riders at this event will travel either the 100-mile route or the 32-mile route, both beginning and ending in the new Mosaic District in Fairfax, Virginia – Washington DC's most innovative retail and entertainment community. Previous VTV Gran Fondos were held in Blacksburg, Virginia.
Notable riders at this event include the VTV Cycling Team and Monte Frank from Team 26 and the Sandy Hook Riders, known for their "Ride On Washington" this past March in honor of the Sandy Hook victims. VTV has also personally invited their friends U.S. Senator Mark Warner, U.S. Senator Tim Kaine, U.S. Congressman Frank Wolf, U.S. Congressman Gerry Connolly, U.S. Congressman Bobby Scott, and other state and elected officials to attend.
The event is open to the public and all ages are invited to show their support for improving campus safety. There will be plenty of activities for cyclist enthusiasts, local Virginia Tech football fans, VT Alumni, and kids of all ages. If the VT football game is televised, it will be shown on Mosaic's 40-foot outdoor jumbotron. This could be the largest gathering of fans for VT's Homecoming outside of Blacksburg. Look for local food truck specials and boutique vendors near the finish area. Spots are available for additional vendors on a first come basis.
