Washington University in St. Louis School of Law Graduates its First Class of Online LL.M. Students
@WashULaw students from all over the world travel to the St. Louis campus for graduation
ST. LOUIS, May 20, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Washington University in St. Louis School of Law graduated its first class of online Master of Laws (LL.M.) in U.S. Law on Friday, May 15, 2015. Washington University School of Law was the first top-tier law school in the United States to launch an online LL.M. in U.S. Law degree in January 2013 through its innovative @WashULaw platform.
The inaugural graduating class is composed of 25 legal professionals who serve as senior partners, members of parliament, senior associates and business executives from prestigious companies and law firms around the world. The class represents more than 14 countries with graduates traveling to St. Louis from Japan, Ecuador, France, Russia and Brazil to participate in the School of Law's on-campus graduation ceremony.
"We are thrilled that such a diverse and accomplished group of online graduates are now among our growing international alumni," said Nancy Staudt, Dean and the Howard & Caroline Cayne Professor of Law. "We are proud to have these extraordinary graduates joining the ranks of the next generation of truly global thought-leaders and problem-solvers."
"Teaching and working with these talented international lawyers has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my career," said Michael Koby, Washington University School of Law Associate Dean. "Through our journey from the intensive course development process, to meeting with these students on a weekly basis and now with the graduation of our first @WashULaw class, I'm certain that we have provided a world-class educational experience online."
Nearly all of the online LL.M. students are full-time working professionals employed by law firms or organizations outside the United States. It was the online format that allowed most @WashULaw students to advance their careers in today's competitive, global business environment without relocating or putting personal commitments on hold.
"Joining @WashULaw was a great life and educational experience. While studying, I managed to keep my life going such as moving to a new job in late 2013 and becoming a father in mid 2014," said Guilherme Sanchez , 2015 graduate and Associate Litigation Counsel, Google Brazil. "@WashULaw has also helped boost my career, which was extremely important when I advised clients in my private practice and even more important now that I work for an international technology company as litigation counsel."
@WashULaw's online classes are taught by the same renowned law school faculty who teach on campus. Students meet in intimate live weekly classes and engage in immersive course content developed by Washington University faculty. The course content includes documentary-style lessons, video case studies and an interactive Socratic Method learning technology unique to the @WashULaw program.
Students also have the opportunity to attend a one-week immersion in St. Louis, Missouri to meet faculty and classmates on campus; observe live court hearings; network with law firms and other organizations; and meet with federal and state judges.
In addition to the online LL.M. in U.S. Law degree, @WashULaw has expanded to include an online Master of Legal Studies for non-lawyers and a dual LL.M./MPJ degree in partnership with the School of Government and Public Transformation at Tecnológico de Monterrey.
@WashULaw is delivered in partnership with 2U, Inc., which partners with leading colleges and universities to deliver the world's best online degree programs so students everywhere can reach their full potential.
