Ricky Williams is inarguably a football legend. For his performance with the University of Texas Longhorns, he was awarded the 1998 Heisman Trophy, an honor bestowed upon the most outstanding player in college football whose performance best exhibits the pursuit of excellence with integrity. He went on to play for the New Orleans Saints, Miami Dolphins, and Baltimore Ravens in the NFL. Yet everything changed suddenly in 2004 when he failed a drug test, testing positive for marijuana.
"In 2004 when I retired from the Dolphins, and I walked away from the game, it felt like time stood still," remarks Williams, who says people were demonizing him as if he were the worst person in the world. "It felt like my whole life, everything I had worked for, was flushed down the toilet."
He believes his marijuana use opened up his mind and helped give him a different perspective. Most importantly, he says, marijuana makes some people feel better—which is not a bad thing. "Getting better starts with feeling better," says Williams, who believes that marijuana is better or at least no worse than Vicodin, which he says NFL doctors hand out eight at a time to players who complain of pain.
Access Consciousness
Today, Williams is a healer and certified Access Consciousness facilitator. He is a licensed massage therapist who specializes in craniosacral therapy. This modality of bodywork—or alternative therapy—focuses on primary respiration and regulating the flow of cerebrospinal fluid using therapeutic touch to manipulate the synarthrodial joints of the cranium. Williams believes football players in particular benefit from weeklong therapy engagements.
Ricky Williams Foundation
A strong believer in the power of education, Williams founded the Ricky Williams Foundation to promote a higher quality of living through health, wellness, education, and athletic excellence. After rescuing a small school from closure in Miami, Williams moved to Austin, where he launched Ricky's Kids, a free afterschool program.
Built on the belief that all people possess the gifts needed to reach their full potential, and that to reach their full potential they must be provided the proper support, Ricky and the Foundation offer underserved children in the Austin area a channel for that support.
Williams Today
Although he says he uses marijuana very infrequently, Williams says that fans still ask him all the time whether he still smokes pot. "It gets old, but it is part of my history," he concedes.
