STOCKHOLM, April 24, 2015 /PRNewswire/ --
The winning entry in the Stockholm Solar Challenge, "Water with sun", will bring to life a self-sustaining urban oasis, by ingeniously combining solar cells, batteries, and a vertical wall garden. The competition may lead the way to several innovative solutions being integrated throughout the city of Stockholm.
"'Water with sun' presents an exciting concept that makes it easy to see how the sun can power a water pump which in turn supplies a vertically constructed garden with water and nutrients. With clearly visible solutions like this, we hope to increase the general knowledge of the advantages of solar energy," says Katarina Luhr, Green Party Commissioner of Environment in Stockholm.
The Stockholm Solar Challenge is an international idea competition aimed at gathering new and inspiring ways to integrate solar energy based solutions in the city environment. The challenge occupied 458 teams from 71 countries, engaging more than 750 people.
The award winner "Water with the sun" will become a hallmark of the ongoing residential development project in the Royal Seaport of Stockholm. But the 70 competition entries filed since October may also spur a wider political effort to place green technology at the heart of urban development.
The challenge presented to the contestants was to conceive of a solar energy based solution with distinct esthetic qualities, to be integrated in conjunction with roads, squares, parks, or other public spaces. A successful entry did not necessarily require a technological innovation, but could also build on existing solutions, innovatively integrated into the urban environment. "Water with the sun" did just that, by visualising a self-sustaining vertical garden, using solar cells, batteries and a water tank.
"Our goal was to create an oasis adapted for the dense city part of everyday life. The vertical garden only needs sun and rain to become a closed off self sufficient eco-system," says Daniel Linberg, architect and joint award winner with Michiel van Noord, sustainable urban development consultant.
The Stockholm Solar Challenge is the result of a collaboration between the planning department of the City of Stockholm, Vinnova, and Sqore. The winning entry, rewarded with SEK 50 000 prize, was presented on April 22 at Ecoforum, trade show on sustainable urban development.
