WBU Christian Colleges Plan Creation Care Week on Plainview Campus
PLAINVIEW, Texas, Nov. 8, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- As part of the commitment to creation care and "go-green" initiatives, Wayland Baptist University will hold its first Creation Care Week November 7-12, emphasizing environmental issue with various programs and initiatives throughout the week.
The administration at Wayland has made a commitment to taking care of God's creation through recycling and the conservation of natural resources. Led in large part by the School of Math and Sciences, Wayland is trying to build a culture that embraces the idea of caring for creation.
Activities throughout the week will focus on various student groups and their green initiatives, including SIFE's drug drop-off where community members are encouraged to drop off out-of-date medication and other medical waste on the second Wednesday of every month. The Wayland Geological Society (WBUGS) hosts a Running Water Draw clean-up project, and the WBU community garden has produced several hundred pounds of fresh produce for the local Faith In Sharing House.
The week's activities will also feature climatologist Dr. Katherine Hayhoe speaking in chapel about climate change. Dr. Hayhoe is an associate professor and director of the Climate Science Center at Texas Tech University whose work has been used to develop state and federal policies. As a Christian scientist, Dr. Hayhoe tries to dispel misunderstandings that make global warming a controversial topic in both Christian and secular circles. The chapel service will be Wednesday, November 9 at 11 AM.
Wayland is also teaming up with the City of Plainview and SIMS Recycling to collect computer and electronic generated waste that cannot be disposed of by typical means. Community members may drop off computers, printers, monitors, televisions and other electronic waste for proper disposal. The drop-off will be held from 9 AM to 2 PM. For more information, contact the School of Math and Sciences at 806-291-1115.
