ANAHEIM, Calif., Sept. 15, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Microsoft BUILD, Anaheim Conference Center 201B -- Data breaches and theft can be detrimental to any company and preventing the accidental loss or misuse of sensitive documents is a major IT security concern. Today at 1 p.m. PDT, Microsoft® BUILD developers conference attendees will see a live demo of the new Microsoft codenamed Windows Server 8 File Classification Infrastructure (FCI). The demo will feature the integration of Websense data loss prevention (DLP) technology and FCI. Backed by Websense data classification expertise, this collaboration allows organizations to accurately monitor, identify, categorize, and ensure protection and proper use of sensitive information -- as it is being authored.
Websense DLP technology is a key feature in the Websense® TRITON™ solution, which offers unified web, email, and data security. The TRITON modules are available separately or together, and can be deployed in enterprise-grade appliances, as cloud-based services (SaaS), and as powerful and efficient hybrids of on-premise and SaaS elements working together.
"To help customers properly identify and control access to sensitive information, Windows Server 8 enables continuous content classification and access control based on that classification, so that companies can protect their valuable data and intellectual property. Websense data loss prevention and file classification technology is a great defense for our joint customers," said Manlio Vecchiet, director of Windows Server product management at Microsoft.
Here's how it works: To control document use, organizations must be able to identify what is and is not sensitive information, while accurately categorizing new information when it is created. The Websense DLP technology and Microsoft FCI integration analyzes new data, classifies it based on content, and applies the appropriate tags to the file, which are used to enforce its use and transmission. No manual intervention from the author is required.
A typical scenario would be a user who is authoring a document that contains sensitive information. Websense data loss prevention uses a variety of technologies to accurately identify data, including built-in classifiers for credit card numbers, social security numbers, financial information, intellectual property, and other common types of information. Additionally, Websense proximity analysis incorporates context into the equation by examining information close to the data.
After content inspection, sensitive information is identified and tagged according to the organization's policy. Organizations can create tags based on custom policies or use the more than 1,100 built-in Websense policies available through a simple wizard. These policy templates also apply to specific industries and geographic regions. The tags accurately control file access and protect sensitive corporate data from theft and misuse. And all of this happens with no manual intervention or user interruption.
Websense data loss prevention technology then allows companies to enforce proper use policies on tagged information, which ensures data isn't stolen, accessed or otherwise used inappropriately. With TRITON Data Security, organizations can stop, encrypt, or quarantine transmission of sensitive data and audit, remove/tombstone, or encrypt data discovered in non-secure locations.
The company's data theft and accidental loss prevention solutions are also tightly integrated into Websense's Web Security Gateway and Email Security Gateway, which are parts of the Websense TRITON solution. Known as Websense TruWeb DLP™ and TruEmail DLP™ this market-leading data loss prevention technology is embedded into the Websense web and email gateways to prevent data loss through the web.
"Websense's collaboration with Microsoft demonstrates how our data loss prevention technology classifies files in real time, while enforcing policies that keep company data from being lost or stolen," said Ryan Windham, senior director of business development, Websense. "Content is being created too fast to not properly secure and classify information in real time. Our advanced DLP technology provides an extremely powerful defense against data theft and inadvertent data leaks. We are the only company to offer this level of protection and integration between web, email, and DLP."
