NEW YORK and TAMPA, Fla., April 6, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- WellCare of New York, a subsidiary of WellCare Health Plans, Inc. (NYSE: WCG), and WellCare's foundation announced today that the organizations gave $5,000 to Bronx House to help the community center build a rock climbing wall and to support the center's other fitness-related events. The WellCare Community Foundation is a nonprofit, private foundation that helps people live healthy, safe and productive lives.
"We are committed to partnering with organizations like Bronx House, the longest running community center in the Bronx, to improve and strengthen the local social safety net," said Joiel Ray-Alexander, director of brand marketing for WellCare of New York. "We can't wait to see the children enjoy the wall and learn the importance of staying active through the center's fitness events."
The wall is expected to be completed as early as September 2016. In addition, WellCare's donation supported the center's Metabolic Madness Month, a variety of family-oriented exercise and wellness events in March 2016, and the upcoming Fun Day on the Parkway, the center's largest outdoor event planned for September 2016.
"We're extremely grateful to WellCare for their great community spirit," said Bronx House CEO Howie Martin. "Their generous donation is helping to make possible the construction of a state-of-the-art rock climbing wall that is going to give children a fun, challenging way to stay active and fit for many years to come. We're especially thankful for WellCare's support as we celebrate Bronx House's 105th anniversary of service and continue to grow the ways that will help our community get and stay healthy."
WellCare and Bronx House announced the donation recently in conjunction with Deputy Bronx Borough President Aurelia Green, who spoke on the importance of providing families and children in the Bronx with fitness opportunities to help the community climb out of its last-place ranking as the least healthy of New York's 62 counties.
