TOLEDO, Ohio, Jan. 18, 2019 /PRNewswire/ -- Welltower Inc. (NYSE: WELL) announced today that it has been named to the 2019 Bloomberg Gender-Equality Index (GEI).
Welltower joins a global group of 229 companies selected to the GEI this year who have committed to transparency in gender reporting and advancing women's equality. Collectively, these firms have a combined market capitalization of USD 9 trillion and employ more than 15 million people, of which 7 million are women, around the world.
Bloomberg's standardized reporting framework offers public companies the opportunity to disclose information on how they promote gender equality across four separate areas – company statistics, policies, community engagement and products and services. Reporting companies that score above a globally-established threshold, based on the extent of disclosures and the achievement of best-in-class statistics and policies, are included in the GEI.
"Welltower is proud to join organizations such as American Express, Boston Scientific Corporation and Procter & Gamble who have taken action towards gender equality in the workplace," said Tom DeRosa, Welltower's Chief Executive Officer. "This recognition corroborates our industry-leading efforts to promote gender equality and create an inclusive environment where all have equal opportunity to develop and succeed."
"Welltower is dedicated to the advancement of women and female leadership across all areas of our organization," said Christy Stone, Senior Vice President of Human Capital. "Our inclusion in the index this year recognizes the progress we have made and reflects an ongoing commitment to our employees."
In the last year, Welltower has taken the following actions towards gender equality:
- Became the first North American REIT to sign the UN Women's Empowerment Principles, joining companies such as Merck, Microsoft, PepsiCo and the World Bank Group.
- Hired women to 45% of revenue-generating positions filled in 2018, which include Welltower's Business Development, Investments, Strategy and Capital Markets teams.
- Appointed two national health care executives to the Board of Directors, increasing female Independent Director leadership to 36%.
