West Anaheim Medical Center Among the Top 100 Hospitals in the Nation
Only Medium-Sized Hospital in California to Set National Benchmark
WEST ANAHEIM, Calif., April 5, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- For the second time in the last four years, West Anaheim Medical Center has been named one of the Top 100 Hospitals in the country by the annual Thomson Reuters survey. The facility is the only medium-sized hospital in California -- and the only for-profit hospital in California -- to achieve this honor.
Thomson Reuters conducted an independent and objective assessment of more than 2,914 hospitals across the United States, evaluating facility-wide performance based on quality in patient care, operational efficiency and financial stability.
"Despite the unpredictability from healthcare reform, West Anaheim Medical Center continues to thrive by maintaining a laser-like focus on delivering the highest quality of care possible to our patients," said Virg Narbutus, CEO of West Anaheim Medical Center. "We are extremely proud to have these efforts recognized by such a prestigious organization, and to set the national benchmark for top performance."
With over 300 physicians on staff, West Anaheim delivers a wide variety of specialties and patient care services to the area community.
"It speaks volumes that West Anaheim continues to provide the highest quality of care to the community while providing a diverse set of specialties and patient care services," said Ginger Edward, Chief Nursing Officer at West Anaheim Medical Center. "This award is emblematic of the strong dedication and commitment our entire staff has for our patients."
Results from the survey found that if all Medicare inpatients received the same level of care as those treated at the award winning facilities, like West Anaheim Medical Center:
- Nearly 116,000 additional patients would survive each year.
- More than 197,000 patient complications would be avoided annually.
- Expense per adjusted discharge would drop by $462.
- The average patient stay would decrease by half a day.
"We are very proud to have been recognized in the past as a leading hospital system," said Lex Reddy, Chief Executive Officer for West Anaheim owner Prime Healthcare Services. "The fact that West Anaheim has been awarded twice demonstrates the ongoing success we are achieving in providing the highest level of care in our hospitals."
The Thomson Reuters 100 Top Hospitals® study is based on public information, including Medicare cost reports, Medicare Provider Analysis and Review (MedPAR) data, core measures and patient satisfaction data from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) Hospital Compare website.
In an objective comparison with similar facilities, nearly 3,000 hospitals were evaluated on the following performance areas: mortality, medical complications, patient safety, average patient stay, expenses, patient satisfaction, adherence to clinical standards of care, post-discharge mortality and readmission rates {acute myocardial infarction (heart attack), heart failure, and pneumonia}.
