"Everything happens too quickly in qualifying to really 'think' about what you need to do, in qualifying it is just rolling that little more speed through a corner, or braking a little deeper and letting your reactions and car control keep the car on track and hitting all of your apexes.  When your mind is full of thoughts about things that do not involve the moment you're in at the exact current time, your reactions and focus will suffer.  You can only focus fully on one thing at a time, so in qualifying you have to get the most out of your mind, to get the most out of the car.
