SACRAMENTO, Calif., March 15, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Americans suffering financial problems leading to unpaid taxes have been solicited by an explosion of new, so-called "tax relief" companies. Companies who promise "pennies on the dollar" tax settlements, with no regulatory restraint or oversight to force them to deliver on their promises. Promises that all too often are never kept.
This has led to many people already in desperate financial circumstances being made even worse off; paying thousands of dollars in fees for services not rendered, while their tax situation grows progressively worse due to lack of proper actions being taken on it. All of this with no adverse consequences to the fraudulent or negligent "tax relief" company.
This fraud has grown to proportions great enough to force many state attorney general offices to file lawsuits against a few of the largest companies, while the Federal Trade Commission sued another. Although these have been steps in the right direction, they have not fully remedied the problem.
To help reduce this shortfall in protection and service to the public William D McConnaughy, CPA, a certified public accountant and long time veteran of tax representation services before the Internal Revenue Service and various state tax agencies is offering free help to tax relief scam victims. He will review tax relief case documentation, advise of any wrongdoing, and provide guidance on how to have action taken to secure refunds of fees paid, and have regulatory action taken against perpetrators of tax relief scams. Mr. McConnaughy has 27 years of experience as a tax professional, with representation services provided to thousands of clients during that time. He is a former IRS Revenue Agent, and holds a graduate Masters degree in Taxation from Golden Gate University.
