Historical Windsor Gardens: There is a rich history behind the land and development of Windsor Gardens that goes back to the late 19th Century when the Windsor Dairy was established on the property by Bill Bush and William Morse. In 1900 the Dairy merged with two other operations and became Windsor, Bancroft and London Dairies. Their creamery was located in a building that still stands at 17th and Blake in Denver.
In1925 the operation was sold to National Dairy Products Company/Meadow Gold and was moved north to land that would later become Stapleton Airport.
The Windsor Farm changed hands numerous times into the 1940s until Danish immigrant Valdermar (Walter) Andersen bought the farm in 1948. The Andersen's were the last family to farm the land before it became Windsor Gardens. Local author Patricia Fletcher grew up on the farm and wrote about her memories there in her book, The Old Windsor Farm.
The land was sold in 1961 to developers Werner Livingston and Howard Farkas who formed the Windsor Land Company. The development project for Windsor Gardens was first announced in 1961 as a residential community modeled after Arizona's Sun City, which was the first major condominium community in the country.
200 people attended the formal dedication of Windsor Gardens on October 27th, 1962. The guest list included Former Colorado Governor and US Senator, Edwin C. Johnson and Oscar-nominated actor Franchot Tone. Local radio personalities Gene Amole, Kay Howe, July Noll, and Starr Yelland broadcast live from the brand new state-of-the-art auditorium, where the Windsor Gardens Variety Show will be staged in September.
