Wipfli and Wipfli Hewins Partner with Money Smart Week for a Second Year to Improve Financial Literacy in Chicago
CHICAGO, March 22, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- This spring, the class of 2017 will leave high school equipped with knowledge on topics like geometry, world history and chemistry — but few will know how to manage a budget or build their credit score, two of the many money-management skills they'll need to navigate adulthood.
But students aren't the only ones falling short; research shows that two-thirds of American adults can't pass a basic financial literacy test, further proof of a national disparity in financial confidence and preparedness. Two local firms are hoping to change the conversation in Chicago: Wipfli LLP (Wipfli), one of the Midwest's leading accounting and consulting firms, and Wipfli Hewins Investment Advisors (Wipfli Hewins), a national, CPA-based financial advisor, are partnering with Money Smart Week® to cohost a series of public, financial education workshops — at no cost.
Founded by the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago in 2002, Money Smart Week is a national, public awareness campaign devoted to helping consumers better manage their personal finances. The campaign, which runs from April 22-29, brings together thousands of organizations across the U.S. to coordinate public classes and seminars covering a variety of financial concepts.
This year, Wipfli and Wipfli Hewins are inviting Chicagoans to join sessions on topics like real estate financing, cybersecurity, financial wellness for women and career paths in financial planning and accounting. Wipfli Hewins will also host a separate educational workshop for middle-school students at the Walt Disney Magnet School.
Wipfli Hewins' Chief Strategy Officer Gretchen Halpin hopes attendees are inspired to continue the conversation around financial literacy long after the workshops are over. "We want to empower people in their financial lives so they can make money decisions that could change their lives for the better," says Halpin. "We're honored to work with Money Smart Week to expand that mission and bring effective, engaging financial education to the City of Chicago."
