With Experience on the Aaron Hernandez Case Michael Maloney Intends to Find Justice for Cold Cases if Elected to Office
BOSTON, Nov. 5, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- Within the criminal justice system, the district attorney plays a substantial role in determining the way criminal cases are initiated and resolved. From charging to sentencing recommendations, the district attorney's office wields a substantial amount of power in the judicial process. When the law is broken, their main responsibility is to pursue justice on behalf of the Commonwealth.
However, a miscarriage of justice happens when the perpetrator of a crime is never caught, leaving behind a cold case. A life stolen while the true perpetrator remains free. Such a case is the unsolved murder of Jordan Miller. After Miller's assailant fired nine shots into his bedroom window, he was taken to Faulkner Hospital where he died the next day. To this day, Jordan Miller's killer remains unknown.
A previous Boston Herald review found that the Boston PD has a backlog of nearly 1,000 cold cases, dating back to 1970. According to this same report, three of the hardest hit neighborhoods, Mattapan, Dorchester and Roxbury have a total of 925 unsolved murders, including the 2013 murder of 20-year-old Jordan Miller in Mattapan.
As a defense attorney I spent time working on the Aaron Hernandez case, representing both Carlos Ortiz and Andrew Booker. This was a high profile case that left a mark on the Boston area, as Hernandez was never brought to justice on all charges, leaving behind an untold amount of cold cases. Hernandez committed suicide in 2017 while incarcerated for the murder conviction of Odin Lloyd.
With that said, as Suffolk County District attorney my inclination would be to open dialogue with the new police commissioner and the cold-case unit of the prosecutor's office, as I believe Aaron Hernandez was possibly involved in additional murders and unsolved crimes.
