Women In Defense to Host Third Annual Black Tie Gala Nov. 4
Excellence in Leadership, Horizon Industry Awards and HORIZONS-Michigan Scholarships to be presented
TROY, Mich., Oct. 3, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- The Women In Defense (WID) Michigan Chapter – a networking and development organization for those who contribute to the national defense and security professions – will host its third annual Black Tie Gala Friday, Nov. 4 at 6 p.m. at the Royal Park Hotel in Rochester, Mich. The event will recognize the group's Excellence in Leadership honoree Monica Emerson, Navy diversity officer, U.S. Department of the Navy and assistant secretary of the Navy, Manpower and Reserve Affairs. The organization will also present its Horizon Industry Awards to defense industry professionals for exceptional work, as well as WID-Michigan's HORIZONS-Michigan scholarships.

As a Highly Qualified Expert appointed by the Secretary of the Navy, Emerson provides expertise and leadership regarding internal and external diversity strategy, policy, planning and activities. Her scope of responsibility includes military, civilian, reserve and contract personnel.
Emerson has received numerous awards for her accomplishments and, as founder and principal of Monica E. Emerson, LCC, she serves as a nationally respected strategist and consultant on diversity and inclusion in the workplace.
In addition to the Excellence in Leadership recognition of Emerson, three Horizon Industry Awards will be presented to individuals and / or teams who have distinguished themselves in their field and have assisted their organizations in developing new ideas and exceeding business goals. The three award categories include: Product Development; Business Development; and Supply Chain Development.
The chapter's HORIZONS-Michigan scholarships also will be awarded. The scholarship program was established in 2009 to encourage females to pursue careers related to national security and defense interests of the United Sates, and provide development opportunities for women already working in these fields.
