
Installation begins on the National Museum of Women in the Arts (NMWA)New York Avenue Sculpture Project
WASHINGTON, April 15 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Artist Niki de Saint Phalle's larger-than-life, whimsical sculptures celebrate cultural diversity, nature and women. The Three Graces, the centerpiece and icons of the project, will be welcomed to their temporary home in D.C. The colorful mosaic works are between nine and 15 feet high and transported in large wooden crates. The sculptures are delivered on a flatbed, taken out of their crates and then carefully hoisted and placed with a fork lift.
The New York Avenue Sculpture Project will enhance the city's public art profile while featuring changing installations of contemporary works by world-renowned women artists. Organized by NMWA, it is a collaboration between the museum, the Downtown D.C. Business Improvement District (BID), the D.C. Office of Planning and other agencies.
What: Installation of Niki de Saint Phalle's Three Graces. In Greek mythology, The Three Graces were women who personified charm and beauty. Saint Phalle rendered her figures in yellow, black and white to signify unity among people of different races.
