World Premiere Of The Snow Queen Melts Stereotypes Of Winter Theatre
SAN JOSE, Calif., Nov. 18, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Hit "pause" on the Nutcracker – this holiday season theatregoers are being dazzled by San Jose Repertory Theatre's world premiere new musical, The Snow Queen, Nov. 27 – Dec. 22, 2013. The new musical adaptation of Hans Christian Andersen's classic coming-of-age fairy tale embraces adventure and empowerment from a girl's perspective. Celebrating the strengths of womanhood miles beyond the Disney princess storyline makes this production one of the highlights of San Jose Rep's Season of Innovation. Adapted by San Jose Rep's Associate Artistic Director, Kirsten Brandt and Producing Artistic Director, Rick Lombardo; The Snow Queen touts a cast of Broadway talent and an original pop-rock score by Haddon Kime.
"In the world premiere of The Snow Queen, we take a look into the human experience of growing up and explore losing one's innocence, without falling into stereotypes of the Disney-esque female role," says Lombardo. "During her quest, the young woman finds strength within herself, not from a male rescuer."
The Snow Queen is not your average bedtime story and bucks the norm for holiday theatre. By sidestepping the damsel in distress paradigm, San Jose Rep stages a triumphant tale to warm the hearts of holiday audiences, without the predictable tropes that have aggravated many progressive parents for years.
The coming-of-age adventure follows Gerda through an unimaginably dangerous and whimsical world with singing flowers, a chattering crow and a talking river to save her friend, Kai. An original pop rock score and urban steam punk costumes turns this 150-year-old fairy tale into a fantastical epic quest.
